Doncaster Rovers 0 Bolton Wanderers 5
AFTER FIRING blanks in their opening two friendly games, Wanderers made the trip to Championship side Doncaster Rovers hoping to finally get their goal tally underway.
It was at Keepmoat Stadium where Wanderers fans caught their first glimpse of new signing Johan Elmander, who started alone upfront in a familiar Wanderers formation.
It didn't take long for the first goal to come when on six minutes, Wanderers took the lead.
After some great passing football through the midfield, Jlloyd Samuel raced down the left before crossing to find the head of Kevin Davies who nodded home from close range.
Five minutes later and the lead was doubled, a long ball up field was half cleared and debutant Elmander was on hand to let fly a sweet left footed shot across Sullivan into the bottom corner.
At this stage, the score did seem a little harsh on the newly promoted Yorkshire men, who had their own fair share of possession, the pick being Stuart Elliott's drive forcing Jaaskelainen into action, saving low close to his right hand post.
From then on Wanderers were in control, and proceeded to add to their already adequate goal count.
This time Fabrice Muamba earned a slice of his transfer fee when he capitalised on acres of space and hit a thunderous effort into the net from 30 yards.
Minutes later it was four and questionably the goal of the game thus far came from the unlikeliest of scorers.
Republic of Ireland international Joey O'Brien etched his name onto the scoresheet when he made the most of some poor defending and picked the top right hand corner as the destination for his first Bolton goal.
At the break, Wanderers manager Megson made one change, giving youngster Bogdan his chance to shine in place of Jaaskelainen.
It appeared in the opening stages of the restart that Wanderers had taken their foot off the gas a little, but Doncaster, who has made various changes, fared better and were voiding the divisional gap that was evident in the first half.
The common defensive pairing of Cahill and O'Brien was often called into action, with substitute Tomi Ameobi going close on several occasions.
It proved little in the way of a consolation from the home side and Wanderers soon regained control before adding a fifth on 71 minutes, Joey O'Brien this time the creator.
His lengthy run and pass found Gretar Steinsson, whose low cross evaded the Doncaster defence and Johan Elmander was readily available to double his total for the evening with the coolest of back heels past the stranded Neil Sullivan.
Moments later the Swedish international was replaced by Topi Obadeyi , before another debutant Riga Mustapha, who had received his international clearance shortly before the game, entered the fray in place of Davies.
It was however to remain the same scoreline until the end, in what proved to be a very confident and encouraging Wanderers performance and one that Gary Megson can take various positives from as his squad travels to Greece on Sunday.
